The applicant said the deck gives him sight lines to supervise three young children in an unfenced yard, adds property value, and that he built it after mistakenly believing a ground-level unattached deck needed no permit.

The neighbor to the north said he and his wife have no objection and described the Steckels as good neighbors.

The adjacent neighbor said she doesn't oppose a deck but worried it sits too close to her fence for maintenance, and about future owners making noise under her bedroom window; she'd support it five feet off the fence.
